Thetford Center Post Office suspended indefinitely due to safety concerns
"The building is not in good shape."
The Thetford Center Post Office announced and officially suspended operations at the close of business today, May 2, citing safety concerns with the building. According to a letter from the U.S. Postal Service, this is a temporary suspension, not a permanent closure—at least for now. However, a postal worker outside the facility noted, “It’s probably going to be permanent. The building is not in good shape.”
What This Means for Residents:
- P.O. Box Holders: Your mail service is moving to the Thetford Hill Post Office at 2734 Route 113—just one mile away. You’ll be contacted directly about the transition, including refunds if applicable.
- Street Delivery Customers: Daily delivery should continue as usual, but you will need to pick up packages or accountable mail at the Thetford Hill Post Office.
- No Change in Zip Code: Thetford Hill will now essentially function with two ZIP codes.
While the USPS emphasizes that a final decision about permanent closure has not been made, any move toward discontinuance would involve public notice and an opportunity for local input. Updates will be posted at the Thetford Hill, Fairlee, and (now-closed) Thetford Center Post Offices.
